A reader asked me for my thoughts on the question, so in true off the top of my head fashion, let’s begin – Feminism has highlighted the ways in which women are dis-empowered and disadvantaged under patriarchy, but men can experience oppression under patriarchy as well.

Valarie Solanas’ controversial essay ‘The SCUM Manifesto’ is routinely and ignorantly cited by anti-feminist men as “evidence” that all feminists are hell bent on the destruction of men. Apart from the fact that SCUM does not represent mainstream feminist thinking, it was not written as a literal piece of work. Contrary to popular mythology, Solanas never formed or lead any organization called The Society for Cutting Up Men; it simply did not exist.

News and magazine columnists across the western world are celebrating the rise of in-your-face sexuality as a sure sign that the modern woman is sexually empowered and liberated. From my point of view, I don’t see that much to celebrate. If we take a moment to look at what is underlining and motivating this in-your-face brand of sexuality, I would argue that quite the reverse is true, and that this so called empowerment and liberation is based on false and dangerous pretenses.

I’m sorry, but this feminist cannot get down with the whole fat positivity scene. Not because I have a problem with fat perse, but rather I have a problem with the serious health problems that fat can directly contribute to. Like diabetes and heart disease – and sister, there aint nothing positive about that.
